From cascading waterfalls to mountain peaks, Ambleside offers the chance to explore both Lakes and Fells. Here we show our favourite short walks from Ambleside that will appeal to walkers of all abilities and are easily accessible on foot from Iveing. Stockghyll Force is just 15 minutes walk from the property and particularly in winter, the thundering waters of this waterfall are sure to impress. The walk to Rydal Caves is low level and takes in the famous Stepping Stones and Rydal Water where you can swim. Extend your walk to Grasmere to take in Wordsworth’s birthplace and famous gingerbread. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, then why not tackle Loughrigg or Wansfell – both are Wainwrights and are visible from the house.

1. Stockghyll Force – 2 miles round trip – Short walks from Ambleside

One for all the family: a captivating waterfall surrounded by ancient woodland. This short loop will delight your toddlers and impress even the surliest teenager!

Starting from Ambleside town centre, head south on Church Street, passing by shops and cafes. Take a right onto Stockghyll Lane. Follow the gently winding lane as it leads you uphill. After a short distance, take a left turn – it is well signposted. The track is easy to follow but can be muddy so sturdy shoes are recommended. Stop off at the viewing point to see the waterfall from below. Climb the steps to the bridge and marvel at the cascading water, framed by moss-covered rocks and vibrant foliage. A little higher up the lane you will find The Force Cafe – excellent food with stunning views.

2. Rydal: Lakes, Caves, Wordsworth and Waterfalls – 5 mile round trip

Starting from Rothay Park, take the scenic route towards Rydal Caves. Cross Millers Bridge and follow the single track road, passing Stepping Stones before a short climb to Rydal Water. As you approach Rydal Caves, immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring natural architecture, formed by the passage of time. Drop down to the water side and follow it through woodland, crossing the main road. Hint: stop for a pint is The Badger Bar before you reach Rydal Mount – the historic home of poet William Wordsworth, soak in the tranquility of the gardens and captivating views. For the return journey, walk through the grounds of Rydal Hall -don’t miss the mystical Grot, a hidden gem nestled in the woods. A delightful walk weaving nature, culture, and history into a tapestry of delights.

3. Grasmere – 12 miles round trip

4. Loughrigg – 8 miles with some ascent
